David Colvin completes his charity ride to Coventry

bigpicArriving at the Golf Club at 6am (a time which most of you know I don’t normally do) finding Steve and his merry men hard at work we managed to interrupt them long enough to get a few photos done, some with my eyes open! With pockets loaded with energy bars and full bottles, we set off at approximately 6.15am. After a comfortable ride over the Wolds and at 45 miles in we started looking for a coffee, which is quite difficult in rural Lincolnshire at 9am on a Tuesday but the very generous Graham Bradley (Pro at Blankney Golf Club) supplied us with free coffee & biscuits in return for a photo (I assume we’re now the stars of their newsletter!) Deciding to try and achieve 90 miles before lunch we cycled on for another 3 hours through Sleaford, to the east of Grantham, between Melton Mowbray & Oakham and stopped at the Stilton Cheese Inn in Somerby to replenish some carbs - that’s food and a pint for all non cyclists. Only 45 miles to go but who knew Leicestershire was so hilly? nothing serious but just continually up & down so we started looking for refreshment around 1/2 way to go but ended up at the Royal Oak in Brandon 5 miles from our destination (correct name, wrong location) . The final leg was a comfortable ‘stroll’ through the outskirts of Coventry to the Royal Oak in Earlsdon where Susan, my Granddaughter Olive and a pint were there to welcome us. I have to say a big thank you to all members who have generously sponsored the ride, raising £700 for Zebedee Performing Arts Club and to my son Ben and his soon to be Father in Law for pulling me along the 136.54 total mileage.
